Ever feel like you’re always stuck playing in the same spot on your guitar? We’ve all been there. The good news is the CAGED system is one of the best tools to help you break out of a rut and see the whole neck of the guitar in a way that invokes a new level of creativity. Here’s how it works:
1. Learn Chords in 5 Simple Shapes
The system is based on five chords you probably already know: C, A, G, E, and D. These shapes can all be moved up the neck with a barre. That means you don’t just know one version of a chord—you can play it anywhere. Suddenly, the neck feels much bigger and a new world of creative options is discovered.
2. Connect the Shapes Like Puzzle Pieces
Each of the five shapes links right into the next one. When you slide one shape up, the next shape picks up where it left off. This creates a chain of chords, scales, and arpeggios across the whole fretboard, so you never feel “stuck in a box.”
3. Turn Shapes into Music
The real magic happens when you use these shapes to build solos, riffs, and melodies. Every chord shape has its own “neighborhood” of scale notes around it. When you connect them, you can move smoothly up and down the neck, hitting the right notes no matter where you are.
👉 With practice, the CAGED system takes the mystery out of the guitar neck. Instead of random notes, you’ll see patterns—and those patterns make playing feel natural and more creative.
